About the place

The museum was founded on 3 November 1834. Its present building, designed by the architect Grigore Cerchez, was opened by King Carol I in 1908. The zoologist Grigore Antipa ran the museum for 51 years and reorganised it in the new building, and since 1933 it has carried his name. After a major renovation it reopened in 2011.

The collections hold more than 2 million items: animals, fossils, minerals, rocks and ethnographic objects. Following Antipa's idea, the permanent exhibition is built around dioramas that show animals in their habitats, from Romania and around the world. In autumn 2026 the museum also hosts the temporary exhibition 'Reptile vii' (live reptiles).
