About the place
The house was built in 1964–1965 as an official residence for Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. After his death Nicolae Ceaușescu lived here with his family for a quarter of a century, from 1965 to 1989, and the house was enlarged between 1970 and 1972. It was designed by the architect Aron Grimberg-Solari, and the interiors and furniture are by the architects Robert Woll and Agrippa Popescu.
The guided tour takes about 45 minutes and goes through the rooms of the house. The interiors have panelling in Romanian and exotic woods, paintings by Octav Băncilă and Camil Ressu, and hand-made tapestries and mosaics. Foreign leaders such as Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon and Fidel Castro were received here.
