It recalls the Otopeni massacre of 23 December 1989, in which around 50 people died, and is the site of the yearly commemoration.
About the place
The memorial stands in the airport area, next to the Aeroport Henri Coandă railway station and the Arrivals car park, on a small marble-paved plaza. Its inscription reads: “Tell our country the truth: we were where we had to be!”
On 23 December 1989, soldiers sent from a unit in Câmpina to reinforce the airport guard were shot on the access road by other troops, who took them for terrorists. Eight airport workers on the bus taking them to work were also killed. Sources give different figures, most of them around 40 soldiers and eight civilians. Every year on 23 December a military ceremony is held here, attended by survivors and relatives of the victims.
