About the place

Lake Snagov formed as a river liman on the lower Ialomița and is about 16 km long, 5.75 km² in area and up to 9 m deep. Its shores are largely wooded with oak, remnants of the old Vlăsia woods, and in summer white and yellow water lilies flower on the water. The central part is a protected natural area where motorised water sports are banned; the Indian lotus, brought in artificially, is treated here as an invasive species.

The lake has long been used for rowing and kayaking: four national sports bases stand on its shores, and the Snagov Regatta is held here. On Saturdays and Sundays, Fundația Snagov runs one-hour boat trips from Artha Park (Strada Plopilor 1) and, on request, from the central pier in Snagov village, out to the monastery island; the 90-minute version includes a stop on the island.

Good to know

  • The boat leaves on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:00 and 17:00; book ahead, as a trip only runs with a minimum number of passengers.
  • Kayaks and bikes can be hired through Fundația Snagov (snagov.ro).
  • The water lilies flower in summer; out of season the shores are quiet and good for a walk.
