About the place
The plans are by the architects Friedrich Schmidt of Vienna and Carol Benesch. Work lasted from 1875 to 1883, and the cathedral was consecrated on 15 February 1884 by Archbishop Ignazio Paoli, its founder. The building is 40 metres long and 22 metres wide, and its stone came from the quarries at Ruse (Rusciuc) in Bulgaria.
Inside are stained-glass windows, a marble altar and wall paintings, and the cathedral hosts organ and sacred music concerts. Pope Francis celebrated Mass here on 31 May 2019. Next to the cathedral rises the Cathedral Plaza office tower, which the Archdiocese describes on its website as illegally built.
