About the place

The present palace was designed by the architect Nicolae Nenciulescu and completed in 1937 on the site of the old princely and royal residence. After King Michael's forced abdication on 30 December 1947, the museum moved in. The building was damaged in December 1989 and the galleries reopened step by step after 2000.

The National Gallery shows old Romanian art from the 14th century onwards and modern art with works by Nicolae Grigorescu, Ștefan Luchian and Constantin Brâncuși. The European Art Gallery grew out of the former royal collection, with works by El Greco, Tintoretto, Rubens and Rembrandt. The Throne Room, the Royal Dining Room and the Carrara marble Voivodes' Staircase can be visited during the same opening hours.
