About the place
The building at 55 Lipscani, a late-19th-century house with shop on the list of historic monuments, was bought in 1903 by the banker Nicolas Chrissoveloni for his bank. Under communism it was nationalised and became a shop, and after 1990 it fell into decay. The family recovered it in the second half of the 2000s and strengthened it with a new concrete structure inside the old walls; the Cărturești bookshop opened here in 2015.
Besides books you will find stationery, teas, games, figurines and gifts, and there is a café upstairs. The restored interior, with stairs and galleries on several levels, draws many visitors who come only for photos. It holds 4.8 on Google from more than 25,000 reviews; some say it is very crowded and that people stop on the stairs to take pictures.
